Zane Schultz

Zane Schultz explores light, cosmology, and improvisation, through the mediums of painting and book arts. He is interested in what spontaneously arises from paint, plant matter, found poetry, and other materials that inhabit his daily life in Philadelphia.

Unbroken Flow: Blue Set

I allow the materials moving through my life to dictate the book's content. This series of books explores chromatic color. Each page is two sided with found poetry written on either side. Pages have no specific orientation, they shift in content, form, and light while navigating the sets. The found poetry in this series comes from “A Price Guide to Wallace Nutting Pictures”. I stumbled upon this book unexpectedly and used the price list in the back of the book as poetry. Reading the price list titles sequentially creates a shift from an outdated-commercial-americana into freewheeling pathless poems.

Pages: Plexiglas, rice paper, pigment, gum arabic, Philadelphia tap water, silicone sealant, graphite, morning glory Box: tyvek, rice paper, book cloth, ribbon, bone clasp, book board, glue

Green Fold-out Book

In my work, the fold-out structure serves the purpose unfolding Space Time. Unfolding is a way to expand a moment of time. I am interested in the way color soaks and vibrates on the surface of the page, through the layering process I included a full scale of color to increase the quality of light. In relation to the theme of the exhibition, this book is influenced directly by my experience with an Albert Pinkham Ryder painting (Landscape ca. 1870). In 2021 I saw a retrospective of his work and made this book in response. Ryder’s paintings are a gate to deeper life.
